IMPACT Justice Committee Meeting

For Release Upon Receipt - Monday, March 7, 2016

The Mediation Legislation Committee of the Canadian Government-funded project Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice) is meeting to discuss a Model Mediation Bill drafted by IMPACT Justice in response to requests by several CARICOM governments for mediation legislation. IMPACT Justice, which is a regional justice sector reform project, is being implemented from within the Caribbean Law Institute Centre, UWI, Cave Hill Campus.

This is the third IMPACT Justice Mediation Legislation Committee meeting. At the two previous meetings, held in December, 2015, and January, 2016, the Committee provided feedback on the Draft Model Mediation Bill to inform amendments, and agreed on a way forward for finalisation of the Bill.

The meeting will take place from March 7th – 9th at the Pegasus Hotel, Georgetown, and the Committee Members will review and finalise amendments made to the Model Bill, with a view of its adoption by CARICOM Member States.

The Committee comprises a Supreme Court Registrar; a Mediator; a consultant Legislative Drafter and representatives of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, the Dispute Resolution Foundation, Jamaica, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission and the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.
